The floods this year have struck with a cruelty that words can barely capture, leaving the people of the Chittagong Hill Tracts in desperate need. Nearly 11 indigenous communities of Thanchi, Bandarban have been hit hard, with contaminated water spreading waterborne diseases, and the aftermath of destruction causing countless injuries. Stories Beneath the Flood: Voices from KhagrachariThe floods in Bangladesh have unleashed unimaginable suffering on countless families, tearing apart their lives and leaving them in a state of despair. The relentless waters have not only submerged their homes but also stolen their sense of security, leaving them vulnerable and isolated.In the remote areas of Khagrachari, this nightmare unfolded three times in the last two weeks. These lands, home to a significant number of indigenous communities living harmoniously with Muslim and Hindu neighbors, were completely submerged, their homes engulfed by the rising waters. For days, they had no place to stay, no shelter from the relentless onslaught. Now, even as the waters recede, a thick layer of mud—more than a foot deep—covers their lives, robbing them of the basic necessities like gas, electricity, and even access to roads.Team GenLab reached out to these communities, listening to their stories, understanding their needs, and learning about their expectations. It is clear that the devastating effects of climate change are not just a distant threat but a harsh reality they live with every day.
